usb ports not recognising my memory stick

For more on marking an answer as the "Best Answer", please visit our FAQ.I have absolutely no idea why the following might work but I found a thread which suggested that it has done so for several people. Since it can't do any harm (and it doesn't cost anything!) it might be worth a try:
Plug the stick into a USB port.
Close your PC.
Unplug the power cord.
Hold the start button of your PC in for 5 or 6 seconds, then release.
Plug the power cord back in and restart your PC.
