Can anyone recommend a straightforward phone, O2 Pay As You Go. No gimmicks needed. Must be robust enough to accompany the owner when working outside. Thanks.

can't recommend, but this is the choice of what they sell
Do Nokia 3310's still work? that's the most basic phone I can remember having, All you could do was ring and text. No colour screen just plain and simple mobile phone. maybe Nokia do a more recent version of that which is just as basic.
Nokia 1600, can be got on ebay, unlocked, for £10, does texts but no silly stuff, battery lasts over 2 weeks on standby. Has buttons big enough for adults and no hinges.
Try John's phone. It doesn't even do texts. Just makes and receives calls:

There's also Hash mobile. They do SIM free, dual SIM phones. No 3G, just basic calls/texts/calendar etc., and a single game. I got the the SNOW on a Groupon deal. I run O2 PAYG on it and it's great.
Sorry - link would be useful woudn't it:
