Should I renew my Norton anti-virus...

....or download something from the web? I seem to remember reading that there is better software out there, anyone any comments?

AVG is good but you will need to keep up-dating it as a manual operation; because the firm wishes you to have its 'paid-for' automatic up-dating version....Well that was my experience, so I have now installed on my computer Microsoft Security Essentials which is also free and easy to download. Furthermore, and I apologise to other ABers whom have heard me say so often, Microsoft should know how to keep its Windows clean.:-)

I have Microsoft Security Essentials free download. At the time I couldn't afford to buy another Norton and I've stuck with Microsoft instead. I'm not technically minded but I have tried another free download (can't remember what it was) and it messed up some of the other apps on my laptop.

Avira is very good at updating itself if you can put up with the nag screen every time it does so.
Its a shame how many people fork out good money unnecessarily

Hi Mark....I reported briefly my experience of the 'free AVG' and would add that every week I had to up-date it, but was continually being offered the 'Full version' at a cost. However, so that we are not at cross purposes on this one I would appreciate your further comments...Perhaps you are making reference to the 'paid for' version of AVG of which I cannot comment.

Unfortunately I cannot find the thread where I think Buenchico (Chris) said something about Malwarebytes being the best to to suss-out and clear nasties and MSE then being employed to protect from virus infections.

If you are there Chris..please say something.
