PLAYING IPAD/IPHONE ETC THROUGH TV

Hi

Can someone advise me what the wee adaptor thingy is I need to be able to play my music, games view pics etc through my tv. I belive it goes in an HDMI port but I no sure what the device looks like....miles away from the nearest Apple Store so would like to get from Amazon but to be honest don't really know what I am looking for.
