I have always had my resolution on 1400x1050, but recently I changed it down to 1280x1024 to improve the performance of my computer.  After I did it though, a lot of the fonts became blurry and even after I tried playing about with the text sizes and smooting settings, it didn't really change.  Is there something else I need to do?  Or can do?

I assume from the original resolution that this is either a laptop or a flat-screen monitor? In this case, these monitors have a "native" resolution, and any other resolution (unless a direct division of the native resolution) will look "blocky" and odd. Strangely, even though the resolution is lower at 1280x1024, your computer (if it is a laptop) will actually have to do *more* work to convert the native resolution down - so you may get better performance leaving the resolution as it is, and dropping the colour depth (from 32-bit to 16-bit, for example). Hope this helps.
