i am buidling a site and the default setting looks fine when editing but when i preview it in a browser it looks too thin and there are one inch white spaces down the sides.

its 750 x 1000 pixels

my laptop screen is a widescreen - but i have rarely, if ever, seen any other sites that appear like this onscreen

whats the industry standard?

thanks

I'm guessing you eed to tryfor percentage width rather than fixed pixel width.
I can type really, just winding you up.
you need to look at website design tutorials and then you will seel the myriad of variables that will affect how a page will look on screens of different sizes and in different browsers
I wonder if you progressed with this Joko?
If going for a fixed width, you need to broker in the fact that the verical scroll bar takes up some space, plus if the table has cell-padding etc - and in addition, it is simply not comfortable for the viewer to have a full-page-width webpage.
Try something like an 860px wide table, centrally aligned.

hi mosaic, no not really not yet...just want to go with something that suits everyone ... ideally one that adjusts to suit to the screen but i dont know if thats possible.

i am going to leave space either side, just filled with the background, so as not to get the white lines, but so people dont have to keep scrolling side to side just to read text etc, and so they only have to scroll down.

i was looking at some big picture background websites and they recommend 2000 by 1000!...which seems very wide to me...

the site will mainly be a few pages of text and a page with a pic gallery ...basically an online portfolio, no forms or ecommerce etc
