Adobe Illustrator. You can create the shapes you require, import the pic, place the shape over the pic, select both of the items and then make a clipping path, which will basically crop off the image around the shape leaving only the pic in the shape of a rectangle
Nothing like suggesting a £300 + bit of software is there!

If you don't want to spend quite that much (i.e. nothing)

Paint.net is fairly quick to learn and painless.
ChuckFickens You can download a trial version for 30 days, you can also pick up older versions for peanuts on e bay.

Thanks shiznit but I haven't got that prog.Is that available with a free download??Perhaps someone will come up with another prog that does the same.
http://www.adobe.com/...?product=illustrator, you get 30 days. There are probably plenty of other apps, but thats what I use every day at work and it is the design industry standard.

Hope you get sorted
I'm guessing by the question that the OP has no previous experience at this kind of thing and you reckon Illustrator and clipping paths is the way to go here ?

Brilliant !!
if you have Word all you need to do is make text boxes and insert the pictures inside ,you can make them either squares or rectangles and any size
A pair of round ended scissors and a pritt stick is the way I would do it.

(They won't let me have pointy scissors)
bazwillrun its not rocket science now is it?, I posted an answer to a question trying to help someone out. This site is getting worse
Not if you know how to do it it isnt, I hardly think Illustrator (free trial or not ) clipping paths and its learning curve is going to be of much use here
have to agree with baz, if you don't have the knowledge already these things are not easy!
I agree with baz.... but I'd also say that their suggestion of gimp suffers from the same steep learning curve problem (although it's a brilliant program for free and I'd recommend it to anyone who wants to do any editing but doesn't want to buy photoshop)

Thank you all for your replies.Chuck I d/loaded that prog.that you suggested, but when I want to upload some photos all I can get are details from within my folders and not icons.
