AJAX doesn't work . . . . .

I am trying to enter some competitions via my usual competition website and have been told via a pop-up that "AJAX doesn't work".

I presume that they don't mean the cleaning liquid version of Ajax - can anyone tell me what is/isn't happening.

It has happened before and I know that it will sort itself out - but what is AJAX?
