Stupid question of the day - can I put music on a DVD and play it in a CD player?

At last!

I find this very annoying and think it should not be allowed.

Not if the player can not also play DVDs, in which case it'd be a DVD player.

The basic rule is things are backwards compatible, never forward...

So CD player where the first can can only play CDs

DVD players came next and can play CDs and DVDs

Blu ray players were next and can play CDs, DVDs and blu ray disks.

DVD-audio is possible, but most software doesn't support creating it.

Thanks to all three of you. I will just stick the music on one of my ipods and listen that way.
