Where did you lose it, cant you just do a search for that file name?
If it's not in the recycle bin, then try Undelete 360 - download available here http://www.undelete360.com/

has worked very well fro me in the past - just use it as soon as possible after the file is lost

< very good for recovering lost jpg files on camera cards too >

I tried ratter but it comes up with a new page.....pah !
Try a search for *.xls (or *.xlsx if the file was created in Excel 2007 or 2010). That will find all files with the relevant file extension.

tried all 3 but none worked, or wont open as it asks for Ms Front Page ? Do I have to reload Ms Office ?
It is unclear to me, when you say "lost" whether you mean you do not know where it has been saved, or that it has been deleted.

And when you say none worked, what didn't work ? Do you mean it didn't find the file, or that it found the file but the computer 'thinks' it is a Front Page document ?

Apologies but questions at this site seem to be getting less clear by the day, or maybe it's me getting old & senile.
If you haven't previously saved it at some point, then you won't be able to retrieve it.

had to reload Office from CD. Adobe upgrade caused the crash. Police forensics manage to retrieve info from hard drives....how ?

4y work lost :( thanx all for help.
Unfortunately if a file is deleted then the last thing you need to do is install further things over the top. It can overwrite the "deleted" data. Unfortunately a bit late for that now. Sorry to hear about 4 years work lost, but I guess it underlines the need to back up anything valuable from time to time.

I have backed it up in parts but its here, there & thither. Am knitting it back.

Its comforting to know that corrupted & lost files cant easily be retrieved from hard drives, as is often claimed by geeks.
