Had your contract come to the end of the agreed term or did you cancel early? Sorry if I'm "teaching my grandmother to suck eggs here," but if the latter applies, it's common for them to take some or all of the payments due under the remainder of the contract
If you ended the contract then you are legally liable to pay the remaining term of the contract.

A friend of mine recently stopped/tried to cancel their mobile contract (2 months of a 24 month contract) and had to pay 900 quid or have the bailiffs round.

A contract is an agreement of law, you can't just walk away from it.
