lame file for Audacity.

I have downloaded Audacity on my computer which runs on Vista,so as to convert some vinyl and audio tape tracks into MP3s.

To do this one also has to download a lame file, which I have done.

The problem I have is what to do with this file.

I have gone into C:programme files and clicked on lame_enc.dll, and up comes a caution stating "you are attempting to open a file of type application extension (.dll)" Open with.

Will I be safe to open this with Audacity?

You don't need to do anything with the file.
When you go to produce an mp3 with Audacity, it will ask you for the location of the file. Once Audacity knows where it is it will use it in the future.
Alternatively, you can tell Audacity where to find it right now.
In Audacity, click Edit/Preferences
On the left click Libraries
On the right, next to mp3 library, click locate
Click browse and locate the lame_enc.dll
Click it and then click Open
Click OK
Click OK

Spoke too soon I'm afraid.

I went into into Audacity, clicked Edit/Preferences.

But that is as far as I got.

Could not see any suggestion of 'Libraries', so I could not proceed any further.

What have I done wrong please?

Which version do you have (Help/About Audacity)?

Just checked earlier version (1.2.6)
If that's the version you have then:
Edit/Preferences
Go to the File Formats tab
In the section "MP3 Export Setup", click Find Library
Click Yes
Navigate to the lame-Enc.dll and click it
Click open
Click OK

Hi,
I downloaded LAME, and my computer slowed up. when I looked to see what was running, LAME always seemed to be taking 45% of the memory and running for no reason as I was not using audacity. I did find audacity easy to use, but had to delete LAME and audacity to get the computer working again.

Lame doesn't run .. it is not a process or program.
I guess if it was corrupted .. or couldn't be found, that could 'hang' the program up until forced closed.
Next time, try to open Task Manager .. may have to wait ..
then locate the offender .. force closed.
You may have to re-start Explorer there too .. in the Task Manager.

I liked audacity, so I will reload it and LAME and try again, it may well have been corrupt, as it did not seem to finish loading, I had to end it manually.

Thanks again rojash, yes I do have Audacity 1.2.6 on my XP computer and the Beta version on my Vista computer.

Sorry Chris, yes I do have that link already, although it seems a little vague where the Lame file is concerned.

Try this: In Audacity, click Edit / Preferences / Libraries / Locate... / Browse. Then find where you saved the Lame Library (usually called "Lame_enc.dll". Click on it (to open it into Audacity), then save the preferences.
