A 1394 port is a firewire connection. Not really sure why it's labeled as a network connection. Think of it like USB. but much faster.

Sorry, you wanted an example usage. I use firewire for plugging my iPod into my computer. Turns out the name firewire was coined by apple

Nice one mike u really helped me there... really cleared that up for me!  Does anyone else have any more uses for that port then?
Most video cameras these days can use firewire (1394) to copy the contents of their tape to your computer digitally, meaning there is no loss of quality. You can then add captions, a soundtrack, fancy fades between scenes, then burn your movie to a DVD for watching on your telly.
You can get external hard disks that connect via firewire so you can back up all your stuff quickly(ish).
I used to use my firewire port to connect a Sony laptop to my main machine (I think the card for the main machine was about 10 from eBuyer) - and with a cable between both, was a much nicer version of a cross-over cable, but at 4x the speed of ethernet...
The firewire port can be used as network adapter which XP runs the winsock stack over it, You can get firewire network hubs, remember firewire runs at 400mbps as opposed to LAN at 100mbps !, I think its for future use.
