web sites that are free to use and don't charge like gumtree etc how do they make a profit from them? always wondered this

Hi "factor30" wudnt it take ages to establish a good site, there would be heaps of costs etc to keep it running

not sure dee, adverts I suppose, but I love Hot Uk Deals, that site has saved me loads of cash over the years!.......I have a look every day!.......

The costs come down to what you charge for your own time, if you are providing your own site. If you are paying someone else to make a website and turn a profit from so doing, you'll be in for a very long wait.
Have a look at how google blogs offer to 'monetise' your blog, you'll get an idea. Plus, for people to buy in quantity, you have to be selling something they want cheaper than anyone else.
