I am thinking of buying the £89 kindle from Argos. I just have normal pc connection and not wifi. I presume I can still connect even though I am not wi fi connected.

Are you sure you don't have a wifi router? Most people do.
It's a lot less hassle to register the kindle on a wifi connection, and a heck of a lot less hassle and quicker to download your books via wifi.

However, a wifi connection is not essential.

In order to download books, you'll need to download them first to your computer, then transfer them to your kindle via the USB lead.

Here in the U.S. the Kindle Touch with Wifi and 3G connectivity is only $30 U.S. more than the stand alone Wifi. Amazon pays for all the 3G charges and you can use it anywhere there's cell phone available. Works great and worth the money...

I much prefer to download to my pc and copy to my Sony eReader.

That way I always have a back up of my books, even if my eReader is lost / stolen / broke.

With a Kindle you always have back-ups anyway hc, they are stored on your Amazon account and can be downloaded again at any time.

Does that include the books you buy away from Amazon, daffy?
I get my eBooks from many sources.

If you buy books from somewhere other than Amazon you would have to download them to your PC first anyway and then transfer them to the Kindle.

You can do that with a Kindle as well. But the advantage of the Kindle is that if you delete a book from it, it remains on your kindle account and you can re-download it from anywhere in the world without going near you PC.

I have a Kindle G3. It has the wifi built in. It costs £149, but I think it is worth it as you do not need a PC to use it or to download books. You can download your books, papers, periodicals etc wherever you are.

Silly question maybe but gotta ask ,does the kindle just down load the text of the book or does it down load pictures?

It downloads pictures too. Anything that is in the book etc.

Thanks was thinking of one but would only be interested in old books non fiction and of local region maybe pre ISBN.

They have about 400,000 books in the shop. Some as cheap as 49p! In fact; some are free on special offers. The dearest I have paid is £9.99 for a £27 book. Most of them are just a couple of pounds.
