Black bars

Sometimes I have 3 dense black bars across the top of my Internet Explorer 8 page header. The first is right across the second line of print, underneath the www address bar. The next black line is right across the line which begins with Favourites. The the half line which includes the Home, Feeds, Printer and Page buttons is also blacked out making them impossible to read.
Is there any way I can rid myself of these black bars please?
