Google Chrome Search Problem

I've always been able to search by opening a new tab,and typing in my search term. But that has changed in the past day or so.
Now,when I type in a term-all sorts of unrelated urls come up for other sites I've looked at. I've enabled and disabled 'instant' and it has not made a difference.
I can search with the google homepage fine-but I'd prefer to open a new site in tabs.
