Is it possible to creata a table in Word 2010 (I can do that bit) and then lock, or fix, the borders so that they don't move, or drop down on to the next page ... as if they we sort of drawn on the page?

I don't understand. What is going to make the border move?

As you type, the cell change size to accommodate the text.

I want them to not do that.

I want the cells to be definitely in the same place on several successive pages.
by "size" I assume you mean 'width"? Under "Table Tools"/"Layout" just set the width of each column to be what you want it to be. The columns will then stop re-sizing as you type.

I'll give that a go, dr b.

I actually mean width, and also height.

eg. If I put a 2x2 table on a page, I want all 4 cells to stay the same size, so I can then go on to the next page, and paste another identical table.
under table tools/layout/cell size you can also fix cell height.
