What I think I want is a sound card with 2 or more outputs.

What I am trying to do is to play music in one room without it playing in both rooms. Ideally, I would be able to play mp3s in one room using one set of speakers, and play a game in the other room using another set of speakers.

Any clues on what sound card I need and what software will handle this?

I don't think there's any comercially available soundcards that can do this - I have a 5.1 sound card with 6 channels of sound, but I don't think there's a software option to split the outputs (certainly not within windows anyway).

You could do that with two sound cards.
If you double-click the speaker icon in the system tray, then choose Options.....Properties, there is a Mixer device drop down box at the top. If you had 2 sound cards, there'd be two entries in that box. You could mute "Wave" on one sound card and "Aux" on the other. I don't know if these are the right inputs for what you want, but the theory's good.
You may have serious driver conflicts with this setup though, I don't know how that'd work.
