Compact digital camera

Any suggestions please. Am wanting to buy a point and shoot camera with the highest quality photos for landscape and portrait, but does not need extras, I.e. big zoom, or quality video etc.

I have had three cameras since december so I wish I knew. I have recently started reading all the amazon reviews and found them helpful. It seems every manufacturer has produced a couple of dogs to be avoided and when you get an answer I will be interested.
