Getting worried about high memory usage from svchost files slowing down my computer (a LOT!!)

I know these are important files to run windows but they are using waaay more memory than they should as I checked my friends' laptops to check this. Basically when I run 'Resmon' the svchost.exe (LocalSystemNetworkRestricted) is using: (Commit 291Mb, Working Set 246Mb, Shareable 20Mb, Private 225Mb) sometimes less than this.

I have been checking online for a solution but most of the responses are 'don't get rid of it!' which is not what I am trying to do, just to stop it eating up my ram!

Solutions to this are very much appretiated as I am now playing games on their lowest graphics and even then it's jumpy.

Thank you methyl, I did realise after reading the link I should have added my OS.
I have Windows 7 Service Pack 1, 4Gb RAM.
The physical Memory is:
Total 4094Mb
Cached 1600Mb
Available 2615
Free 1077
Paged is 288 and Nonpaged is 66
With nothing running the Memory usage is a constant 1.3Gb

Others will disagree, of course, but 4GB just isn't sufficient for Windows 7. It WILL run, of course, but at a performance level you're experiencing. Add more memory - it's so cheap these days...

I really don't recommend disabling the Universal Plug'n'Play service, Chris, unless you never use any such devices..

@MarkRae I didn't take plug'n'play off but I did find some useless aplications running which freed up some RAM but not significantly. I will look into doubling my RAM which will be only £30(new).
@methyl I ran the Fixit and it didn't really find anything that would boost the performance, I checked all the driver upgrades, defragged the computer, installed all the windows updates and checked for steam updates
The game I am currently playing is Skyrim, which ran smoothly on medium graphics up until two weeks ago. My whole laptop is just generally slower and I am rather tempted to do a factory reset yet it is only a year old now. In fact, the guarantee ran out at the start of the year....which I will not get paranoid about right now! Should I increase the Pagefile size?

I'd leave the page file alone. You've already said you're going to double the physical RAM - that will pretty much sort everything out, and Windows may or may not adjust the size of the page file when it detects the extra RAM anyway.

And, unless the machine's active partition isn't formatted with NTFS (which it almost certainly is), defragging will have have had no effect whatsoever.

Cheers Mark, I did notice the defrag took a lot less time than it used to on my parents computer years ago. Will have to update myself on NTFS formats as I have lost touch with computers since leaving college.

Although I will be making the computer extra speedy, I am still not sure what had made it suddenly slow in the first place.
