Perhaps I got something wrong, I must have missed something. This student, Richard O'Dwyer, has found links to places where people can watch films for free. The films were not on his website at all, he only learnt where they were by going to places such as google (perhaps), yahoo (perhaps), AB (perhaps) and because he is sharing where he found things now the americans say we're coming to get you? Is that right? Oh, and the kid placed on his own site which contained no pirated material at all, advertising...a bit like bloggers do through google, yahoo, etc...so the americans shut down his site, which was based here, begun extradition proceedings, and our courts say there's nothing we can do because we didn't read the small print in the contract? Oh and by the way, we can't do the same thing in america because americans have rights - they're a sovereign country. What have I missed? Is this REALLY going to happen? Will we soon start getting traffic fines from america should we have a ding with a car being driven by an american on holiday here? I'm really frustrated this morning because I'm sure I've missed something...Can anyone put my feeble mind to rest? Please!

apologies, I meant Extradite!
yes they can
This isn't a new story, but he's alleged to have broken US law from within this country, by undertaking on-line activities.

Btw We're a sovereign country too, US isn't surely, they don't have a sovereign?
Yes they can extradite people from Britian for petty crimes that have never set foot on US soil- because our disgusting Govt cowtows to anything and everything America desires, because apparently we have a ' special relationship'- slightly like a warlord and his camp follower from what I can see of it.
ps this is not new, Ever heard of the natwest 3?

point taken, just not quite how they perceive themselves now that they don't have the Bush guy....he seemed to always think of himself as a bit of a King (queen?)...

But we can't do the same thing to the yanks? Hardly sounds like a fair cricket match.

Yes, I remember them quite well. But I excluded them from my thought in this instance as they had travelled to the states quite a few times and if I remember correctly, one of them even lived there for a brief period.
however, they were extradited despite the fact what they did was in britain and broke no british laws

sorry..can't get the fingers to work this morning... I meant to say, just not quite sure how....
I think I heard that the extradition arrangements we have with the USA were to be reviewed by our Government in the light of the absurdly biased balance of evidence required for a British person to be extradited to the USA in contrast to the vice-versa situation. BTW anyone know how the Garry McKinnon situation stands a the the moment ?

What caught my attention most was the news reader commented that whilst the americans can extradite in this manner, we cannot. That's what raised my eyebrows most of all. I hope that isn't true, but perhaps it is. It was also mentioned that this agreement materialised in the midst of the Iraq situation and was meant to expedite the movement of potential terrorists into the american's hands. To me, that's where it all becomes so opaque as I thought both they and we were simply doing this anyway as part of the 'rendering' process no one acknowledged. I'm just too naive I suppose.
we can extradite Americans, largely we have chosen not too.

That was very interesting, thank you Crosswordfan!
He gave people the means and the location to where illegal links were hosted.

It's a bit like you setting up a website where others link to the selling of class A drugs or guns etc. You may not be hosting the product but you are hosting the link and the means to get that product by others.

My first question to him would be 'what purpose was your website set up for?'
The evil prosecutors in the U.S. and the evil officials in the U.K. who conspired to have him extradited chose their professions so they could do harm upon society.
