If you still prefer to lug the printer to a shop, you can indeed remove it with the PC still running but ensure the printer is powered off before removing the USB cable and power cord.
Thanks for your trouble, Kempie. I probably could do it but you have no idea how my eyes glaze over at the thought of following manuals. I don't think the printer is too bad too take to my nearest PC world. I'll be brave and have a look at the manual first, though.

kempie - the manual on screen was much more attractive than the manual (the same), which I do have. I have taken out the cartridges and I think I'll use them a bit longer without replacing. That's a relief! Incidentally in reading it on screen I see why I cannot scan a document (I've had all the stuff for three months but haven't used the scan facility yet.) The 'next to the time' icon is not on the icon tray. Just got to figure out how I get it there now.
