Both!
There's a genuinely free version but you have to take care not to click on a link which takes you to a trial version of their full commercial security suite. Use the ORANGE button here:

(and take care that you're not then tempted by a link to a trial version).
I used AVG Free for many years but, like several others on here, I found that the most recent versions caused a dramatic slowing of my computer. Like many others, I've now switched to the free version of Avast!

(Once again, take care to follow the correct links).
However, ChuckFickens (who works in the IT industry) is among a growing number of fans of Microsoft Security Essentials (which is also free)

Take your pick!

I have MSE and never a hint of a problem. I started using it 2 years ago instead of renewing Norton. An alternative is to open a Barclays Bank account and register it for online access, they give you the latest version of Kaperski free if you want it. You only need to open a basic cash card account and pay £1 in , you never need touch the account again, you can get the free Kaperski as long as the account is open.
AVG used to be OK but now it is complete rubbish. I used to have it.
Even when not connected to the Internet it would claim that an update had been completed and the computer needed to be restarted. It would do this in a popup window disrupting whatever you were doing. Then it would ask again several minutes later.
It delayed the start of any applications for several minutes after I logged on and this wait continued to extend. It was bogging down the computer.
Then it decided that all ebay item pages were all infected with a virus and prevented anything being added to my lists.
I now use Microsoft Security Essentials which quietly and efficiently does the job. Getting AVG off the computer was a struggle.
