Closing a googlemail address

I have opened an extra googlemail address and wish I hadn't - it is causing confusion with paypal accounts. Can I completely remove it so it is gone and lost please?

Do you mean a second gmail address attached to a single google account, or an entirely separate account.

If it is a separate account then :

Login to gmail
Click on your mail address (top right of page)
In the drop down list click on Account Settings
At bottom of list there is an option to Delete Entire Account
