HP Media Player

I have a new PC HP Media Player with TVT-TV monitor.  I don't see it as being any more use than my usual  TV as it will still receive the same TV signal as my existing one won't it?  If I get a TV splitter I understand I can receive TV programmes on it as well as on the existing TV, but I imagine they will be the terrestrial channels, same as now.  This was just an afterthought to my question below.  I am sure a computer whizz can confirm that.  Thanks.
