Accessing and exiting AB.
23 Answers
I have a desktop icon which I established as a short cut to my Profile page on AB and am able to access the page with a single click of my mouse. However it has never been my practice to 'Log Out' from the site but merely to disconnect by use of the X button on the top of any given page.
However, I have been led to understand that, unless one actually 'Logs Out' there is a danger that my computer could be subject to attack by unknown personnel. However even if I 'Log Out' I am still able to re-enter into the 'sign-in' page for AB; which is completed with my username and password in unidentifiable spots. A further single click and I arrive at my Profile page. ( All functions on my mouse are programmed for single clicks.)
Consequently, I ask all AB Techie members...." Am I doing wrong , and if so, what is the quickest, easiest and safest methods to enter and exit AB.?

It also depends, i think, on the security settings in your browser- I think there is an option there regarding saved passwords.
I'm not sure there is a big risk in having automatic sign in for AB apart from the risk that someone may use your computer and post in your name, but as you wouldn't walk automatic sign in to things like paypal, ebay and online banking so as a precaution, in case anything has been stored in the cache, I clear the cache on my browser regularly.

factor30...I haven't really any problem, but am seeking confirmation that what I do is relatively safe. Forgive me if now I appear to be unfairly questioning you..."Didn't you post recently that sometimes you type a reply to a question, only to discover that you can't post because you have failed to 'sign-in'.? Also ,were you not concerned about having to type in your password when reporting a posting to Editorial staff. ?

Ron I always log out of any website I've been on to before closing down my laptop. I know of people who just put their PC's in 'sleep' mode. I don't know a lot about computers, but like you I have a thought that I could be snooped on if not closed down properly. I'd rather sign on and off, accessing AB by the 'favourites bookmark'.
Hi ayg...I am regularly putting my comp into sleep mode, but only after I have gone off line and my browser is inactive. It's just to enable me to start-up a lot quicker than waiting for Windows to load everything before I can go back on-line.
Certainly I would prefer that access is prevented to my files but, if they are viewed, there is nothing which could be of any real use to anyone. I do not have any real personal info in the comp and, as I do not bank on-line I feel relatively safe; although I suppose it would be possible for a hacker to get the account number which I use for purchasing goods on the internet. However, on that issue I have a very small secondary current account, which is independent of my main banking account and is kept to just a few hundred pounds, which can be topped-up if I need to buy a large item; as was the case recently when I purchased a new fridge freezer to replace a 28yr old item.

I don't have a lot of personal info on mine, no banking or buying and selling, Only gas/electricity readings, so I'm not likely to be much joy to a hacker. Unless they want to wade through my family tree.
I hate it when I get spam e-mails and such and wonder how they got my e-mail address. I know what you mean about the time it takes to switch on and load Windows though, mine takes ages.
