typically how long before a virus takes effect?- ive got one called isass.exe for ages and i cant end its process in task manager as windows is using it- i reguarly run various scans -is this virus active or dormant?

It's a key logger so it's probably still active - best get that sucker exterminated quickly ... this site tells you how:

Careful here! Lsass.exe is part of windows security, but isas.exe is a virus.
Just be careful before deleting it, make sure you have the right one!

May I recommend an app called Killbox.exe the Zip of which can be downloaded from http://spywareinfo.com/~merijn/files/

it allows you to delete files at reboot and has saved my life with Viruses which cannot be removed "bootstrap" etc, by AV means.

Use at you own risk and be very careful that you know the use of the files you are deleteing as always.
