Can any one tell me why my computer shuts down when I go into stand by

That's the whole point of standby -- to shut down and save energy when not in use, but let you start back up where you were without rebooting. Are you saying you can't start up again?

Yes I know that the problem is when I click on stand by it shuts down and will not restart sceen comes up blank are it restarts as from the begining and I get a blue page cheching dos or what ever is in there now.

But I turn it off instead of stand by it is OK but that is not what I want

Check that actually have the Standby settings correctly set.

Don't know what OS you have but in Win2000 ; Start-> Settings->Control Panel, click on the Power Options and check through the Advanced options, changing as necessary.
