How do I open a .DMP file

Hi,

I have been sent a DMP file to analyse, can some please give me a complete idiots guide of how I see the contents of that file. I am using windows 7 and I have downloaded and installed the debugging tools, then opened WinDBG and browsed to the file but it comes up with a logfile full of errors about my own computer. From what I have read I also need symbols but feel like I am going round in circles....

Can someone simplify please...
