Installing a Sony Hi8 Handycam
I have a problem in that my computer will not recognise my Sony Hi8 Handycam when it's plugged into a USB port despite the fact that my webcam is plugged into the USB port next to it and works fine.
The Sony site, after a great deal of running around, suggests that I need the driver USBDRVEN.EXE which they say can be found on 'this page!!' and so it can but it's just a button labelled USBDRVEN and no matter what I do with it in an attempt to download it nothing happens, it is just a button.
The camera has the usual 3 phono output plus an 'S' video output but neither work at the moment, any ideas where I can download this driver please.
The 3 phono output works fine on a friends machine into a USB port but not on mine, yes I have tried other USB ports on my machine but get the same result, nothing.
I've got acres of video of my granddaughters wedding waiting to be edited so any help appreciated.

The plugs look similar and a firewaire will sit happily in a usb port but do nowt. Look for the 3 pronged firewire sign on the plug part - and if you look at the section of the plug, firewire is slightly rounded at the top whereas usb is kinda rectangular all round.
If it is this, you'll need to enable your computer for firewire if it is not already, which is possibly a bit dear and technical.
Bu I may be completely wrong so don't get depressed.

Seem to have been here before.
You question doesn't really make sense as the camera doesn't have a USB port.
Therefore, you must be plugging it into a USB capture device (This would seem to be confirmed by your statement "The 3 phono output works fine on a friends machine into a USB port but not on mine").
If that's the case then your problem is not with the camera, but with the USB video capture device.
You probably need to install the correct drivers for that. What make and model is the capture device?

Thank you Mosaic but if the camera works plugged into a USB port on one computer then it ought, all things being equal, work on mine, thanks for answering though and if nothing else prevails I'll try your idea about a firewire.
As for your answer Rojash you really should read the question, of course there's no USB port on the camera, and having re-read the question it doesn't suggest that there is, as for where the signal goes once the camera is plugged into a USB port, of which there are some half a dozen on the back of my machine, presumable all the USB sockets on a computer route to the same destination and if they do why does my webcam work fine in the port alongside the one the camera is plugged into?
Since you asked and for the record the capture device is part of the XP OS and is called a Legacy Video Capture Device and for good measure there is also a Philips SAA713X Hybrid capture device which I recognise as a capture device I uesd to use with Window 98SE, it must have got installed at some time but I can't imagine when.
Anyway the people who use this site by and large have always been most helpful and I wouldn't wish to start world war 3, I had enough with the 4.5 years I spent in the Navy during WW2 but that's another story.
Thanks anyway everyone for your help.
