pop-up plague

i am being plagued by a pop-up giving me dire warning of serious errors in registry and in my system--it is in a window titled MESSENGER SERVICE --usually says STOP!! WINDOWS HAS ENCOUNTERED CRITICAL SYSTEM ERRORS AND MUST BE FIXED usually says message from system to alert followed by a web address to go to to fix it--different addresses all the time but all lead to some site or other trying to sell security/reg fix etc--cannot get rid of this--tried adaware--spybot--ewido--virus scan--ms antispyware--anybody ideas--winxp--pops up every 30 secs or so--driving me nuts--don't think it is part of win xp tho

try also keeping windows as updated as possible

Download and install microsoft antispyware from microsoft.com and do a full scan.

Also run msconfig, click the startup tab and disable any unnecessary entries, especially words made up of random selections of letters.

Delete temporary internet files, and empty the Windows\temp directory.

Turn off system restore while you are doing this and turn it back on when you have cleaned up your system.

thanks to u all--tried stevie's suggestion as a 1st option--so far seems to have cracked it--no more popups as yet
