Not very bright where the technology is concerned when I'm trying to get onto different sites a panel appears telling me that the connection has timed out is there anything I can do??

Hope following steps can help you to solve the problem:
1) go to tools and click options
2) click on the advanced button and then click the network tab
3) then under connections click settings
4) click auto-detect proxy settings for this network.
