sp2 plugs up security defences - but isnt that what my antivirus / firewall etc are doing anyway?- what does sp2 do better than these?- it just seems to be a basic security centre
also 99% of time i use mozilla so do i need sp2 anyway?

a service pack (i.e. sp2) is just a collection of bug fixes. so while it also introduces a firewall for protection over a network, it fixes bugs too.

in xp and xp sp1, there were bugs that were found after they were released.. bugs that make it insecure and easier for a hacker or virus type program to break in. sp2 introduces fixes to these bugs.

of course sp2 isn't bug-free either... maybe there'll be an sp3? doubtful though imo; they're probably focusing on longhorn.
