Downloaded July xp pro updates and now computer will not start!

I downloaded updates on my xp pro laptop when closing down last night. Computer started this morning, crashed via blue screen and now just continually checks disk but after saying 'windows has corrected disk it then says windows is starting but in fact it runs to check disk again and on and on ad nauseum. Computer was working perfectly when I closed it down last night 11/07 and updates started (7 I think).

I would be most grateful for assistance please.

try restoring it back before the updates

Thank you Chas. Unfortunately computer just keeps running through 'checking disk' - 'windows starting' - 'checking disk' it does show a banner saying 'press F2 for setup' but I have never been there before!!! Checking Microsoft support it says to press F8 - is this whilst it is checking disk and is it F8 or the F2 to get to 'safe mood'

Has anyone else experienced this problem after windows XP updates on 11/07?

Would be very grateful for assistance please.
