A few days ago during a thunder and light'ning storm I switched off and unplugged my recently installed new computer. When I switched on again all that came up on my screen was a page to do with American Megatrends, that I'd never heard of, and various links that meant nothing to me. Eventually I had to get professional help to get things back to normal. Do others have this problem and does anyone know how to deal with it?

I recall seeing the name to do with the hard coded firmware on the PC board that starts on power up and brings up the rest of the system.

Not sure why you got the page of it though. I expect it was a new PC start up thing of some sort. Probably won't see it again.
As OG implies, you just managed to get into the BIOS for the computer, which is the software that tells the computer what to do when you first turn it on.

Chances are you managed to press the key on the keyboard that triggers this when you turned it on. if it happens again pressing escape normally exits, or if it, just turn the computer off and on again, you won't damage anything doing this from in the BIOS.

(not sure why your "professional help" didn't explain this)

Thanks for your thoughts on this. It's still a bit of a mystery to me and I didn't think at the time to try pressing Escape. At night I usually switch off the mains plug at the wall and haven't previously had the problem. I was told it was too complicated to 'talk me through it' on the phone and can only hope it doesn't happen again.
