On a clear bit of your desktop, right-click and choose Properties. Click on the Settings tab. The slider on the left sets the resolution. It should be at least 1024 x 768. If you need to increase it, slide it up to 1024 and then click Apply. If the screen goes mad, just wait for 15 seconds and it will go back to normal. If it works, you might have to use the buttons or wheel on the front of your monitor to centre the image and make it look right.
On the right hand side is a drop-down box that controls the amount of colours your screen displays. It should be LOADS more than 256. 16 bit would be good (it's actually around 65,000 colours!), more is better if your screen can show it.
When you had trouble with The Sims 2 a few weeks ago, did you ever manage to install the DirectX that was on the disc? If not, put the disc in (disc 1 if you're using the CD version), browse to the DirectX folder and double-click on dxsetup.exe. You may need to reboot later.
If you can't change your resolution settings as described above, you may need a driver for your graphics card. If that happens, post back here and we'll try to help you.
