Looking to buy a Sat Nav.
Are they much the same or should I buy a specific brand such as Tom Tom?
Will be using it abroad on holiday.

Obviously you'll need to get one that includes maps of where you are going.

The vast majority of Best Buys in Which? are Garmin or TomTom. Cheaper, little known ones are cheap for a reason - they aren't all that good.

TomTom are generally considered to be the best there are, but expect to pay for map updates every few years.
