I have a Toshiba flat screen tv with built in freeview and a Toshiba hdd/DVD rd-xs24sb. I can watch freeview channels on the tv ok and I can watch DVDs ok but I can't use the recording feature as I can't tune the channels on the hdd/DVD. The auto tune facility just says failed. I'm using scart leads to connect and the aerial is connected to the tv via the hdd/DVD player.

Found a work around. Set hdd timer to record av channel and set the tv timer to play programme. Not very well explained I know but it works :-)

That recorder has not got a freeview tuner in it.

You'll have to buy an external freeview box if you want to record freeview on it.

The tv has a freeview tuner, so is it not possible for the hdd/DVD to record that?
No, probably not, pretty much all TV's do not output their signal, the inbuilt tuner is only used for what you can see on the TV screen.

Just to answer my own question, the hdd player presumably can only record stuff it has itself tuned into ie analogue only, so the fact that the tv has a freeview tuner doesn't help ...
It should be able to record from an external source too, but the TV won't work as an external source (and even if it did it would be a pain to use because you'd need to leave the TV switched on and on the channel you want to record all the time)

The manual is here, recording from an external source starts at page 39 and a cheap freeview box will cost you about £20

You'll have to copy and paste that link into a browser address bar.... AB doesn't make FTP links clickable.

I found a very good answer to a similar question by a user named theprof. Not sure if you can send questions directly to other users?
