... or (more sensibly) can you recommend a few 'boutique' type hotels that won't destroy the bank balance.

Well, if you want boutique, try the Hotel du Vin ... it's lovely, and just round the corner from the Metropole.

But the Thistle is great. It backs on to The Lanes, it's not stupidly expensive, and the lobby atrium is lovely, especially at night.
