Is it possible to use an old Internet router for a new Broadband service?

I used to be with BT internet, and still have the router which was provided with the service: Version 2.0, type A. I now have Tesco broadband and am currently using the Thomson TG 580 router, which is complete rubbish. Barely able to surf, no Youtube, using the internet at peak time is a no-go, etc.

Now, I have read that sometimes switching routers is enough to solve any issues with connection, speed, etc. So will I be able to use my old BT router instead of the Thomson one provided by Tesco, and how do I go about setting it up?

Thanks :)

Not easily, No... BT home hubs are locked to the BT service as standard.

If you want to try it.

I bought a BT Home Hub Version 2 Type A, still sealed in the box, off eBay.

Accessed the web interface, and one of the Basic Settings reads -

"Enter your broadband username and password (for non-BT Total Broadband customers)"

Entered my Plusnet username and password and it worked fine.
Plusnet is a BT subsidiary, so it will work with them, it certainly won't work with every ISP.
Ah, OK Chuck.

Plusnet are so different to BT I tend to forget that they own them.
I use my HomeHub2 ( black one ) with talk talk no problem ... it's still a BT line so i see no problem,
