A little while ago i had a hard drive crash an had to do data recovery.

i managed to get a lot of stuff back, but theres tonnes of it.

some things that i click on, that i know what its supposed to be, cant be opened because its says its an invalid file... its a picture that was made in photoshop for instance but now its icon is a paint file.
but even some things that have a photoshop icon, wont open in photoshop...so it seems like it may be a word doc or something but the icon has been altered...i dont know

can i just change the file extensions?

is there a programme that can convert and save these files for me?

some files have random names like 8756^765$ and wont open - but they appear to be a picture or file, so i dont want to just delete in case i can find a way to open it to check.

sometimes also it says its corrupted ... can these be saved or pretty much gone?

any ideas how i can retrieve this stuff?

thanks

You can try loads of things, but chances are they are corrupted and lost. usually when this happens to me I spend far more time than I can justify getting next to nothing for my efforts.

Best bet is to try to get a trial of some decent recovery software and be satisfied with whatever it can find. Install to a differnt disk (obviously) and let it salvage what it can to the drive without problems. Also you can try a normal disk repair on the old one afterwards. Spinrite is a good if not cheap disk repair utility. R-studio is a good if not cheap recovery utility (but sometimes difficult to understand what it has found/recovered I find).

thanks og - but i have already recovered all i can - theres lots of stuff that is fine - just a lot of stuff i dont know what to do with

such as images labelled with the name of my niece but its a pic of a lamp or something that i have taken - it seems stuff has been randomly renamed...which means i might delete something i want to keep because of an odd file name

so some of the folders that wont open, i dont know if the file is something i want to try to keep or salvage as the name could be wrong.

when i click on some icons, it say cant open as its corrupted - or it says invalid file format - so how can i make it a valid file format.

if the file is still in there somewhere, but just wont open, id like to try to see if theres a way to convert it to a valid file format
If it is renaming files, then it's worth a try. Can't recall now but I beleive there are utilities out there that scan a file and try to make a stab at guessing what it is and what it's extension should be. Might be worth doing a web search for that. Or get a drive reader/hex editor, see if you can spot a clue looking at the file contents.
