Mifi query

Want to use my iPad for Internet away from home very occasionally and so don't want to enter into any contracts. Have been reading up about mifi via google but I'm not understanding. I have a 3 dongle which I can just put £10 on when I want. If I get an unlocked mifi off eBay which I can plug this dongle into, will this work? Will I have to pay anything further or is it covered by what I put on the dongle? An easy to understand answer on this would be much appreciated because I want to use it next Thursday!

If you have a 3g phone, you can just tether your iPad to that.

Thanks for your answer. I've done quite a lot if googling after seeing this but all I can glean is that it doesn't look like my blackberry bold supports it.
