Windows 8 system restore woe

I did something to cause a problem for my mouse earlier this evening and a simple re-installation failed to resolve it so I thought that I would try doing my first system restore using Windows 8. Oh dear! After an hour and a half it was just sat there saying that it was finalising restoring files, hard disk being hammered, and so I decided to power down. Since then I have been unable to
repair or do a system restore using the Windows 8 disc and am currently restoring from a Windows 7 disc image that I made on Friday.

Was it unreasonable to have powered off after such a long time of nothing seeming to be happening (other than continuous disk activity)? Restoring in Windows 7 only ever took a fraction of that time. R

What is it doing that takes so long - 90 minutes and still in progress when I stopped it, compared to less than 10 for W7?

Don't know what it was doing.... but I would have left it overnight if necessary, or switch it off knowing that it would destroy the install and a reinstall was going to be needed.

I know exactly what I did with the mouse so this question was not about that, it was about how long the system restore was taking. Do you have any information about differences in system restore between W7 and W8 that could explain why it was taking so long to complete?
