Dark kindle?

My Kindle appears to be quite dark when I'm reading it. Is this normal? It's fine in the day, when I hardly ever use it, but at night I have to have the full light on - which kind of ruins the mood.

Is there a setting for the brightness, or is this just how they are?

"It was a present, so I couldn't really turn around and say "I would have preferred a tablet" :)"

You could have, they might have "mistaken" the word "tablet" and offered a cyanide pill though!

If it is a standard kindle then there is no backlight and it is designed as such.

It's a Kindle Touch, if that makes any difference?
That's just the way it's designed. There is a whole slew of add-on lights to choose from, though...

One of those will do. Thanks

It seems ludicrous they haven't put some kind of light into them. There's no way you could read one at night, without a bright light on.
They come in black, graphite, silver and white to match your Kindle.

I suppose so, but one of these devices' USPs is its incredibly long battery life...
I think the idea with a Kindle is "You can read it like a book" rather than "You can read it like a computer screen".

That's great, but I still think they should put some kind of light into the next ones. Surely it can't be that difficult, and would be no different to a phone?
Question Author
Yeah, I suppose. I think "you can read it like a computer screen" would be better, though... :-)
I beg to differ. It has no light built in so that it reads just like a proper book, which it does perfectly.
I received a kindle as a present and someone else bought me a lovely leather cover for it with a built in light which I was very pleased with. However I've never used the light.
A little bit, but not really. You might leave a fingerprint here and there, which could make it harder to read :)

They're designed to be non back-lit so you can read in a normal way. Or on a beach for example!
There is the "Paperwhite" which is a bit closer to what you want. But really, if all you want is a computer screen, why not just get a cheap tablet?
Question Author
Yes, but it's not a proper book, is it. A case with a built in light would be much better I think, as those lights look like they'd be a bit 'in the way'.
eth, I also have that case its brill isn't it.

I like the fact that it does not have a back light, or else it would be very difficult to read outside in sunlight.
Question Author
Yeah, it would work great on a beach, with the brightness of the sun shining down... the warmth on my skin.... ahhh. Sorry, I'm digressing.. :-)
It's also good in the bath!

It was a present, so I couldn't really turn around and say "I would have preferred a tablet" :)
Question Author
FGT, I just think the option to have a back light would be good, or something where you can change the settings and control the brightness.
"It was a present, so I couldn't really turn around and say "I would have preferred a tablet" :)"

You could have, they might have "mistaken" the word "tablet" and offered a cyanide pill though!
but the whole idea of a kindle or similar ereader (as there are others available) is that it is not a tablet it is an ereader the settings on a kindle is to resemble paper - you don'have a torch on a paperback do you!
If it was a present, you haven't wasted any money so why not give it away and treat yourself to one that suits you more. Just a suggestion.
