Are the lenses that work along with SLR cameras all standard fitting? So can I just buy a, item called a digital slr lens and know that it will fit any slr camera?

No, the mounts are manufacturer specific, Canon only work on Canon, Nikon on Nikon etc. Third party makers such as Sigma make lenses in Canon & Nikon (and other) mounts but they are specific to a manufacturer's mounting system.
M42 lenses as used on many slr film cameras can be fitted with adaptors (available cheaply off the internet)for some dslr cameras such as Sony. These do not support autofocus etc. only manual setting.

Thanks guys.
In addition to what Jomifl said, you will also find that modern SLR lenses are extremely expensive with the cheaper ones being often of inferior optical quality.

Some of the M42 lenses you can find (in charity shops/car boot sales) have fantastic optical quality for a fraction of the price. I've been doing a lot of searching recently and am really interested in this area. Hence the response.
Manual focussing all the time can be fiddly but you can buy adaptors that have a 'focus confirmation' chip attached that will beep on your DSLR when in focus.

Latest acquisition: Mint 50mm 1.4 Takumar SMC for 30 quid at a car boot sale including a Pentax Spotmatic 35mm SLR :-)
