iPad 3 - problems deleting hotmail messages.

Using iPad3. I have a hotmail account. On my PC if I am anyway suspicious of an e-mail I can delete it without opening it.
So far I have been unable to do the same on my ipad. No matter what I try the message always opens first. Am I doing something wrong or does this facility not exist on ipad. I find it amazing if it can not be done. Any help would be appreciated.

Chuck I have tried this but the message opens before it can be deleted.

Just found the answer myself by chance. Swipe left to right on the message in the list on Los of screen. Delete comes up I red.
