Ethernet And Wireless Connections
4 Answers
I have a desktop PC which is connected to the internet via an ethernet cable. Some time ago, when I had to move the PC to another room I bought and set up a wireless dongle so that I could still access the internet. Thus the PC is obviously set up for wireless.
My daughter is coming to stay over Christmas and would like to be able to use her laptop to access the internet using my account. Is it possible to set up her laptop for wireless access and still have my PC connected up via ethernet? I don't need any networking and it is unlikely that we would both require internet access simultaneously.
I would welcome any comments / hints.
Thanks

If so your daughter should be able to connect to that router via wi fi as all laptops already have wi fi built in.
If the dongle is a full wi fi dongle that connects to the internet independently (rather than going through a router) you should be able to plug it in to her laptop to enable her to get to the internet.
But going through your router, if you have one, using wi fi is the better solution.

Thanks, VHG, for that reply. My thinking has been a bit muddled but yes, I do have a router which is wi-fi enabled so thinking about it a bit more, there probably isn't a problem.
I realise that my dongle comment was a bit of a red herring. I only got it because I don't have a wireless card in my PC so the dongle actually is a wireless USB adapter. this is what I used to connect wirelessly when my desktop PC was temporarily relocated.
My daughter's laptop has certainly got a built in wi-fi card.
Two subsidiary questions:
1) If my daughter connects wirelessly to the internet, will I still be able to connect via ethernet - or is it "either / or"?
2) If she brings her iPad, does the same apply?
Thanks again.
