My daughter got a playbook for Xmas and likes everything about it except the price of apps. I have been looking at reviews and lots of people talk about side loading apps-can anyone explain, simply, what this is and how you do it.

Yes, It means downloading the apps to your computer and from there to the device. On the Playbook you need to switch it into developer mode first.
