Ad Block

Does using a ad blocker slow your computer down? I have had mine turned on (accidently) and my computer seem to be running faster!

I'm got the same operating system (XP), browser (Firefox 17) and adblocker (AdBlock Plus) on both my desktop and my laptop. AdBlock Plus is usually disabled on my laptop because it seems to slow everything down, whereas it's permanently working on my desktop because it runs normally. So it seems to vary from one machine to another.

I thought having the Ad block would make the laptop run faster.

Blocking ads should make pages load faster but that doesn't help much if the computer's operation, as a whole, is slowed down!

As I understand it, on systems with less RAM (Laptops & Netbooks,etc) installed it may cause the OS to run slower, as it'd take more cycles to remove the ad from the page being loaded, i.e it takes time to run the ad block from pre-loading the page until the page is actually displayed. However, as most desktops have a relatively large ammount of RAM installed, then the "time lapse" on the ad block is not very noticable - hence the computer seems to run faster on a desktop.


The above is only MHO, and stands to be shown as incorrect by other users. :)
